OPPORTUNITY:

Incorporate community input into the $2.2 million redesign of the aging Mathews Palmer Park and Playground.

STRATEGY:

Park infrastructure needed major improvements, but residents worried a renovation without community involvement wouldn't reflect the neighborhood's diverse character, demographic makeup and needs. We initiated a multi-pronged approach to inform the community, facilitate involvement, influence the redesign and create a sense of ownership among residents.

RESULTS:

  • Conceived and implemented the Design Your Park Day
  • Attracted participation of 300+ residents, businesses and elected officials.
  • Compiled more than 250 completed surveys from residents aged between 4 and 74.
  • Co-authored and delivered the Project Report to NYC Parks Department designers.
  • Park redesign approved by residents and Community Board 4. Construction scheduled to begin 3rd quarter of 2015 for completion by Labor Day 2016.

MATHEWS PALMER

"Community initiatives often require people to take on multiple roles. David not only organized and facilitated meetings, he conceived the Design Your Park Day, helped us develop a strategy to reach all members of our community, recruited local businesses to participate with seminars, events and demonstrations, and led design efforts. And while he brought plenty of great ideas, he actively encouraged other ideas and opinions involving everyone in the process. David is a wonderful collaborator who helped make this project a great success."
